Ship manifests: search example

Sometimes the ship manifest provides information that you do not expect. Family lore stated that my great-great grandfather Goligowski came to the United States with his five daughters and one son-in-law. Records from the Ellis Island database, however, showed that only three of his daughters were with him when the Normannia landed. The other two, include my great grandmother, were not listed. It will take further research to find out when they arrived.

When searching indexed records, be aware of spelling errors. For example, at Ellis Island, the transcribed records had two mistakes in one family, making the search difficult: "Jens Peter Hansen" was listed as "Mens Peter Hansen" and his eight-year old daughter "Ida" was listed as "Iva." The family was found by searching on Jens' wife, Lena.
