How to use obituaries

If you know where the person you are researched died, you may be able to locate an obituary by contacting the paper in that area.

Some larger papers have begun indexing their obituaries and you may be able to access this if you use an Internet search engine. The search string should include the name of the city and state that you are looking for along with the word "obituaries." Some of these papers will send you a copy of the obituary if you are willing to charge a small fee on your credit card.

Some historical societies also have microfilm copies of newspapers published in their area.
